A short and sweet post–at the near-conclusion of a lovely fall break here–for a new movie release that–at two hours–is anything but short and more like bittersweet, but very worth your making a trek to the theater. Star father-son actors, Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez (the later also directed,) team up for "The Way," a stunning film about five sojourners on the Camino de Santiago, the path-worn pilgrimage of spiritual seekers for centuries.
In the movie, Sheen's son dies on the path that, in this case, begins in France and spans through the rugged, picturesque, physically, spiritually and emotionally challenging coastal countryside of Spain. Sheen's character, himself, makes the journey but is rarely alone both in this world and from the world beyond.
This is a beautiful, moving film that will feed the soul. And that's what it's all about. See "The Way." You'll thank me. And, thank you Emilio and Martin for your passionate vision. We need this kind of film. Especially now.
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ve liked everything I’ve heard about this movie and I’m looking forward to seeing it.
Thank you, Margie. Just got an email that some of my Unitarian-Universalist friends agreed with my review. That said, the journey is made by all faiths albeit Christianity is a keen emphasis….Yet again, it’s just that, I think. The message of Jesus is universal, the truths of his teachings cross all faiths.
“Who’s the performer of that song?” My friend and I recognized the lyrics “Thank U” at the end of the moving film, “The Way.” (Here’s my review: https://leisahammett.com/2011/10/make-a-path-to-see-the-way.html) We knew the tune, the lyrics, the performer (at least by sound)–which happens to be Alanis Morrissette. They are fitting to the film, to Life and now I recall they were frequently played during my 2003-04 “Year-long” at Art & Soul Studio. May someone else also be blessed with their wisdom….Thank you, Alanis:
“Thank U”
how bout getting off these antibiotics
how bout stopping eating when I’m full up
how bout them transparent dangling carrots
how bout that ever elusive kudo
thank you india
thank you terror
thank you disillusionment
thank you frailty
thank you consequence
thank you thank you silence
how bout me not blaming you for everything
how bout me enjoying the moment for once
how bout how good it feels to finally forgive you
how bout grieving it all one at a time
thank you india
thank you terror
thank you disillusionment
thank you frailty
thank you consequence
thank you thank you silence
the moment I let go of it was the moment
I got more than I could handle
the moment I jumped off of it
was the moment I touched down
how bout no longer being masochistic
how bout remembering your divinity
how bout unabashedly bawling your eyes out
how bout not equating death with stopping
thank you india
thank you providence
thank you disillusionment
thank you nothingness
thank you clarity
thank you thank you silence

Looking forward to seeing this movie, thanks for reminding me about it. I’ve got a fascination with the Camino de Santiago.
Thanks, Charlotte, it’s apparently gotten great press. As I tell Margie, above, two friends went to see it last night and were thumbs up.
Also, Charlotte: I had a friend who walked the Camino!
Hi Leisa! Just from the brief ads and descriptions I’ve listened to — I think it was on NPR the other week (or some talk radio I was listening to on the way to or from Chattanooga) — I have the idea that The Way of St. James as represented in the movie is not as the medieval Christian pilgrimage but as a more modern “finding oneself or dealing with one’s life/death” experience, with spiritual aspects. I am looking forward to seeing the movie, even more now that I read these other comments.
Yes, your are correct, Margie. Hopefully I did not misrepresent. From what I’ve read it can mean anything that you want it to me and also, my definition of Spirituality is quite broad. 🙂
Oh, Leisa, this is something I’ve wanted to do since I was in Southern France in ’09…walk the path, that is. So for now I’ll see the movie and begin to plan when. Thank you, thank you for turning me on to this!
Awesome, Dawn!
I went to see this movie with a friend who completed “El Camino” in May 2011. It is an inspiring adventure and I’m happy that you share this inspiration through your suggestions to all for seeing the movie!
Leisa, I am interested in dialoging with you with regards to the blog that you wrote on “Spritual Divorce”. Will you email me at olga.dreammaker@gmail.com?
