You're Never too Old to Raise a Little Hell
Do you remember Granny D? More than a decade ago, Doris "Granny D" Haddock walked through
Nashville, if I recall correctly, as I had friends who joined alongside
her as she came through town. At age 89, Nashville was en route of her 3,000-mile solo trek from
California, through deserts, climbing mountains, through blizzards to
the nation's capitol. In a taped interview heard during this brief story (print and audio, NPR's Morning Edition yesterday,)
she said lots of time she'd be walking along interstate frontage roads and people, recognizing her celebrity, would honk their horns in support. Her walk was for
Campaign Finance Reform. She eventually made it to Washington where she lobbied her cause. In
2004, the New Hampshire-based activist ran, at age 94, for office but lost. She later wrote a book,
You're Never Too Old to Raise a Little Hell. 🙂 She died today at 100. Grand old Life, eh?
She sounds delightful! I’ll have to check out her book. Have you read it? I hope I will be that full of life at her age.
No, I’ve not read the book, but am considering purchasing it as a gift for my 80-plus year-old future mother-in-law. I am in awe of those aging ahead of me, especially when they are doing it well. I write about that, here– http://leisahammett.typepad.com/the_journey_with_grace/2009/10/invicible-aging-.html, (which is also hyperlinked in this Granny D. post). Meanwhile, I like the advice of Dr. Oz and am trying to take care of my body wholistically and consciously to make it to 100, as I’m planning!
