One week after I moved into our new home, I turned half a century. At this point I'm maybe shin deep in boxes, but the Big Day–I was still over at the Old House culling out 16 years worth of life with a bandage (not a banjo) on my knee. (Torn cartilage–which my chiropractor helped fix beautifully.)
At one point, for this post, I thought I'd make a list of 50 things I've learned. This was a pre-move ingenius idea. I got so far as (ironically):
"Less is More."
I have these three to add that have been my mantras during what I'm labeling "My Summer of Change," (turning 50, moving, getting married):
"No one is going to die!" (If we don't get it all done yesterday.)
"Keep it Simple!" (Referring to our in-home wedding in a month.)
"Good Enough is the New Perfect." (Self explanatory and my clever-original-fave.)
On top of all this change, as written here–my baby turned 16 just three days after my monumental birthday….
And, if you've been following www.LeisaHammett.com long enough, you know I refuse to embrace ageism. I totally embrace and celebrate my age. My birthday was June 10, but I'm still celebrating….Here's to the Grand Gift of Life. Join me, will you? Now, back to moving….(As you may have noticed, I didn't get around to posting last week. First time in 1.5 years since launching here. But…"no one's going to die….")
*Three beautiful heart-ed friends–not including my amazing older sister who sacrificed a week here–spent four days volunteering to help me pack up the Old House. One of them gave me the added gift of verbally appointing me a Baby Crone. I am honored to have arrived.
Lovely piece, Leisa. I love “Good Enough is the new perfect.” I also find it heartening that you had have ideas like the 50 things that never make it to post or hasn’t yet. As a writer,I’m sometimes so frustrated with the many unfinished stories….just realized some part of me believes I’ll get them all finished..kinda like with housework. Well that’s an epiphany. nice piece, keep it up and yes, happy continued b’day. Dawn
Was a little anxious about putting up the word “crone” bc so many do not understand the positive connotation. Of course, you my soul sister who has also journeyed from fundamentalism to universalism do….There’s always ideas swimming in my head for blog posts, especially now. But, when I my wits are organized, I write down the ideas. When life is normal–? I write daily. Blogging is a great discipline if allowed to be used that way.
Happy belated birthday Leisa! Love the list …
Well put, Leisa! As my daughter and I go about planning her October wedding, we recognize the same axiom, “good enough is the new perfect” when you find something that works (venue, dress, etc.) and works well, why look further? check it off the list and move on…
the end result is going to be wonderful.
Thanks, Nancy & Mandy. I’m barely hanging on with the blog this “summer of change,” so your comments are extra appreciated. Sorry, right now, I just can’t return the favor per normal.
Mandy: Tuesday I’ll be posting about divorce language.
